ABOUT

Welcome to Wellstone Elementary!

Paul and Sheila Wellstone Elementary serves students in Pre-K through fifth grade.

We are located in the North End neighborhood of St. Paul, Minnesota, on the corner of Rice Street and Lawson Avenue. In our historic sunlit building, named for the late Senator Paul Wellstone and his wife Sheila, we offer two programs for our students to learn how to read, write, listen, and speak: our Spanish Dual Immersion program and English-language Biosmart program. Students can attend full-day pre-kindergarten and full-day kindergarten at Wellstone.

We provide literacy education with an emphasis on targeted small group instruction. The WINN (What I Need Now) program supports struggling readers in grades K-2 and small reading intervention groups are established for students in grades 3-6 who continue to need support in addition to their regular classroom reading instruction. ELL (English Language Learner) teachers work with students who are learning English as a second language.

In the Dual Immersion program, each child gains confidence as both a first-language model and a second-language learner. Most learning happens in Spanish at the earlier grades, with more English incorporated as the years go on. Our goal is to educate students to be proficient in language that expresses knowledge, opinions, and creative ideas that can change and benefit the community.

Math instruction is provided for all students using the TQE (Tasks, Questions, and Evidence) process, through large and small group lessons. Daily 15-minute Math Review sessions offer students a chance to go over previously learned skills and ensure students get extra support in areas of struggle.

Students are taught to exercise critical thinking skills and to facilitate student-led discussions around content themes and social issues. Student leadership is woven into our curriculum, with a special Wellstone Ambassadors program available for 5th grade students.

We integrate technology into all areas of teaching and learning. All students have district-issued iPads to use throughout their learning day. In addition, interactive white boards are used in every classroom to facilitate engaging visual learning experiences.

We have a well-equipped science lab for hands-on learning and a welcoming, colorful library that all classes visit weekly. All students enjoy physical education classes in a large gymnasium, as well as World Cultures, Art, Engineering, Technology, and Dance classes. With physical fitness opportunities both outdoors and in, Wellstone also emphasizes the arts, partnering with museums and performing organizations.

Teachers host many family events to build connections with families and communicate what students are learning in school. We look forward to meeting your student at Wellstone!
